Round Topped Tall Hats - Source Images
Round-topped felt hats appear to be far more common than their flat-topped counterparts. Historical depictions are numerous, varied, and easy to come by.

While some of the round-topped hats were of a reasonable height to our modern eyes, many of them were remarkably tall. The slideshow of images below are from engravings by Theodore de Bry, made for the elaborate funerary procession of Sir Philip Sidney. There are round topped felt hats on almost all of the hundreds of men processing, be they young or old, rich or poor. If I had not already thought that really tall, round-topped hats were THE thing in 1587, these images certainly would convince me. The button below leads to a web page that shows the entire thing, with clear transcriptions of each section. It is absolutely worth your time - a marvelous resource for men's attire for 1587 London, and clearly a labor of love by those who created it.
